Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences (HGS MathComp)

The graduate school HGS MathComp provides a structured interdisciplinary research training program to promote the developement of new and even more powerful methods of scientific computing and to carry this methodology into new scientific territory.

Spatio/Temporal Graphical Models and Applications in Image Analysis (GK 1653)

The Research Graduate School, located at the Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing (HCI) offers an additional branch of doctoral projects in the specific field of image processing, supported by HGS MathComp.

The International Graduiertenkolleg (IGK 710) "Complex Processes: Modelling, Simulation and Optimization" ended in December 2009.

Mathe-Star

The aim of Mathe-Star is to strengthen the contact between highschools and IWR in the fields of mathematics and scientific computing. IWR offers several cooperations projects for highschools in the Heidelberg area.

BOGY-Project

Within the framework of the BOGY-Project (Berufs- und Studienorientierung am Gymnasium) IWR offers pupils of local highschools one-week-internships to get informed about research and studies in the field of scientific computing.

MINTmachen!

Mathematik und Informatik in Naturwissenschaft und Technik (Mathematics and Computational Science in Natural Science and Engineering) - The program MINTmachen! has been established to foster the interest of young pupils in natural sciences and engineering.

Teaching at IWR

Teaching scientific computing is of special importance, since there is an increasing demand in research, industry and commerce for abilities which are particularly enhanced by scientific computing. It provides solid backround in a scientific subject in combination with the ability to translate a problem mathematically in order to solve it with:

the aid of modern hard- and software
the expertise in the development and application of problem-matching new algorithms
the ability for interdisciplinary cooperation and combination of basic research with practical application
the intimate knowledge of modern dataprocessing techniques.

In this area the IWR mainly focuses on graduate studies and the training of PhD students.

Furthermore IWR is in close contact with regional high schools, aiming at the training of teachers as well as pupils with particular interests in specific issues.
