Welcome to the complex biological systems group

Dr. Franziska Matthäus
Center for Modeling and Simulation in the Biosciences (BIOMS)
University of Heidelberg

Our group is interested in different complex biological systems, including
  • cellular motion (random search, chemokinesis or taxis) and its regulation by internal signaling pathways
  • complex network applications to describe the structure of functional connectivity of the brain
  • neuropathological diseases
We are approaching these systems using
  • mathematical models based on ordinary and partial differential equations
  • cellular automata
  • theory of complex networks
  • data analysis methods for dimensionality reduction, pattern identification, or network generation
Our work is purely theoretical. But since the questions we try to answer are of biological nature, our mathematical and computational approaches are developed in tight collaboration with experimental partners.
