heiAIMS
The Heidelberg – Cape Town Network for Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing (heiAIMS) is a three-year-project to develop the cooperation between Heidelberg University and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) into a sustainable partnership. The field of applied mathematics is an important area of education as it forms the basis of understanding for all STEM topics. The cooperation will focus on practical applications in concrete fields of development in the five countries where AIMS is operating.

Three project lines are to be implemented within the network during the funding period. The partners in the network aim to promote exchange between scientists and students and initiate joint teaching projects through an annual “Summer School Plus” in Cape Town. Planned summer schools will focus on mathematical optimization, data analysis, and global health. A second focus will be on training and mobility for students, young scientists, and staff, including internships, mentoring, and continuing professional development. The third project line aims to promote mathematics under the motto 'Mathematics is Everywhere'. Alongside offers, activities, and events specifically for young people, the program will include initiatives for women in STEM fields and public participatory projects at both locations.
Project Period: January 1, 2023 – December 31, 2025
