IWR News New IWR Member: Prof. Lutz Greb
November 28, 2025
Lutz Greb has joined the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) as a new member.
Lutz Greb leads a team of chemists known for their contributions to modern main-group chemistry, particularly in the design and understanding of strong Lewis acids, molecular reactivity, and unusual bonding phenomena.
Greb studied chemistry at the University of Freiburg and completed his doctoral research at KIT Karlsruhe, focusing on theoretical and experimental aspects of main-group element compounds. After postdoctoral work that broadened his expertise in design and fundamental properties of molecular motors, he established his independent research group at Heidelberg University. After spending one year at FU Berlin, he returned to Heidelberg in 2021.
Since joining Heidelberg University as a professor of inorganic chemistry, Greb has built a research program centered on molecular Lewis acidity, reactive main-group compounds, and applied computational chemistry. His group explores both fundamental questions in chemical bonding and applied concepts, often bridging the gap between computational predictions and experimental realization. Greb has authored numerous publications and is regarded as one of the leading voices shaping the current understanding of Lewis acidity. His work continues to have an impact on inorganic, organometallic, and theoretical chemistry, inspiring developments in chemical reactivity, catalysis, and molecular design.
