IWR News New IWR Member: Dr. Frank Zöllner

Frank Zöllner received the diploma and a PhD degree (Dr.-Ing.) in computer science from Bielefeld University, Germany, in 2001 and 2004, and the venia legendi in medical physics from the Heidelberg University in 2014, respectively. He was assistant Professor for medical physics at Heidelberg University from 2014-2017. In 2017 he became adjunct Professor for medical physics at Heidelberg University.

After his undergraduate studies in computer sciences he joined the Applied Computer Science group from 2001 to 2006 and worked towards his PhD within the bioinformatics graduate program (Graduiertenkolleg 'Bioinformatik', funded by The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation)). From 2006 until 2007 he was a researcher at the Section of Radiology, Institute for Surgical Sciences, Haukeland University Hospital and the Neuroinformatics and Image Analysis Group, Section for Physiology, Department of Biomedicine at the University of Bergen, Norway. In 2008, Dr. Zöllner joined the Chair of Computer Assisted Clinical Medicine as a post-doctoral researcher.

He is currently acting head of Computer Assisted Clinical Medicine at the Mannheim Institute for Intelligent System in Medicine, Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University. He is also head of the Core Facility Pre-clinical MRI at the Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University.

His research interests lie in the fields of pattern recognition, image processing and imaging techniques (MRI, CT, CBCT). In particular, he is interested in applying computational methods including machine learning to the fields of medical imaging and image analysis.

Dr. Zöllner is a senior member of the IEEE Society,  a member of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), the DACH Chapter of the ISMRM (DACH-ISMRM), and the German Medical Physics Association (DGMP).
