Heidelberg Center for Cultural Heritage From Digital Applications to Cultural Heritage Digitalisation: A Research Agenda

  • Termin in der Vergangenheit
  • Montag, 12. Oktober 2026, 21:15 Uhr
  • Heuscheuer, HS 2. OG, Große Mantelgasse 2, 69117 Heidelberg
    • Prof. Franco Niccolucci • University of Florence (Italy)

This lecture traces digital cultural heritage research from early reconstruction and virtual archaeology to Heritage Digital Twins. It examines how 3D visualisation broadened interpretation and access, highlighting the London Charter’s principles of scholarly rigour, transparency and documentation. It considers 3D models and HBIM as valuable but partial tools for documenting, conserving and managing heritage assets. Heritage Digital Twins are introduced as integrating geometry with interconnected historical, cultural, contextual and conservation knowledge. European Union policies and international statements frame the discussion, alongside community participation and knowledge valorisation, exploring how collaboration creates shared cultural and social value for tangible and intangible heritage.

The public lecture with Professor Niccolucci is part of the Heidelberg Center for Cultural Heritage (HCCH)'s workshop, "Kulturelles Erbe in 3D: Perspektiven und Potenziale der digitalen Transformation," taking place on October 12 and 13. The event will be conducted in English.
